KHFinder2Up & KHFinderViz

Install these programs in /Applications as simply 2Up (it sets two Finder windows
of equal maximum size side by side) and Viz (it toggles the display of
hidden files in Finder)

BBEdit

  • Download, install and register the latest BBEdit
  • Create folders:

mkdir /Users/karola/Library/Application Support/Preview Filters

mkdir /Users/karola/Library/Application Support/Stationery

  • Download and install multimarkdown; it installs into /usr/local/bin
  • Set symbolic links

sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/multimarkdown Users/karola/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Preview Filters/DefaultFilter_Markdown

sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/multimarkdown Users/karola/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Text Filters/multimarkdown

  • Copy the locally created multimarkdown template file into:

Users/karola/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Stationery/multimarkdown

and set the file to be a stationery pad by checking the box in Finder info
– Set default new file language to be Markdown

defaults write com.barebones.bbedit DefaultLanguageNameForNewDocuments -string "Markdown"

  • exclude from junk mail if “sender in Contacts
  • change message font size from 12 to 14
  • Show To/cc in the message list
  • display unread messages with Bold font
  • automatically bcc: myself
  • use the same message format as the original message
  • turn off “Organise by conversation”
  • do “Show mailbox list”
  • customise toolbar and add Archive to the left of Bin

  • set on “Notify me about messages from unknown contacts”

By default the Google Talk account seems to set up to use gmail.com as the server and
this does not use SSL. We need SSL so use the server talk.google.com and it will
use SSL which encrypts the messages for secure communications

iPhoto

Our main library of digital photos are held on Ian’s MacBook Pro and this is shared with
Karola’s Mac Mini. Ian’s MacBook Pro must be up with iPhoto running for sharing to work

General: check “show item counts”

iWork

  • Pages & Numbers & Keynote for backwards compatibility

Peak Hour

Preferences

  • reset totals every 1st of the month
  • show totals on menu bar
  • launch automatically when computer starts

Safari

  • home page: https://brackenbury.nz/family
  • privacy: ask websites NOT to track
  • internet plugins: java DISABLE
  • install Ghostery extension (to block tracking)

Scrivener

Create icon on the desktop with link pointing to Documents folder where the Scrivener projects reside.

Splashtop Streamer

  • Required so that Splashtop 2 on iPad can mirror this systems display/keyboard/mouse
    • in Settings, require that the Mac login password be used upon connection

TinkerTool Classic

  • add Eject button to menu bar
  • in Applications set off “prefer iCloud as destination”

Terminal

In Preferences, change text font size from 11pt to 14pt
